Through a variety of mediums, Beau Stanton (he/him) creates large scale murals, mosaics, stained glass, and multimedia animations. Heavily informed by historic ornamentation, mythology, and the Classics, Stanton’s work seeks to draw parallels between past narratives and contemporary human issues, such as climate change, environmental conservation, and post-industrial society. The imagery and themes are always site specific and closely tailored to the artwork’s locale, involving research and scouting of the surrounding area with the goal of creating work that directly responds to its environment.

The mural references some of Buffalo’s iconic architectural treasures, including the stained-glass ceiling from the council chambers at City Hall and one of the eight caryatid sculptures adorning the Buffalo AKG Art Museum’s exterior, originally commissioned for the Pan-American Exposition in 1901 and sculpted by Gilded Age master Augustus Saint-Gaudens. In this version, the figure holds a Corinthian column capital that has started to sprout new growth of local regional flora, a fitting metaphor for a city that’s been enjoying a period of restoration and renewal.
