    Sir Thomas Lawrence

    Portrait of Miss Rosamond Croker
  • June 4-52 (tableform), 1952

    Ben Nicholson

A series of roughly rectangular shapes of pale blue, green, yellow, and white layer over and under each other across the surface of this portrait-oriented oil painting. A loose geometric patterning in thin black pencil overlays some of the shapes near the bottom center. A small, bright red triangle pops out from near the bottom left corner.
  • L'Objet invisible (Mains tenant le vide) [Invisible Object (Hands Holding the Void)], 1934 (cast executed 1935)

    Alberto Giacometti

A life-sized bronze abstract female nude holds her hands placed in front of her chest, as if cradling an invisible sphere. She appears to be perched on a tall chair, which supports and frames the figure from behind. The facial features on her flat, round head are angular. Her long, skinny body terminates in long legs bent at the knee. The figure’s feet rest on a narrow rectangular shaped stool at the sculpture’s base.
  • Fields of Grain as Seen from Train, 1931

    Arthur Garfield Dove

Geometric forms in different shades of red, green, and light brown shape this abstract landscape. A large green triangular shape stripped with seven black furrows, stretches from the middle of the top edge to the bottom-right corner and toward to the bottom-left corner. A dark red shape with a scalloped edge borders the right side of the triangle, and a light brown sphere patterned with five horizontal waves peeks out from behind the triangle’s left side.
  • "Untitled" (Double Portrait), 1991

    Felix Gonzalez-Torres

    "Untitled" (Double Portrait)
  • Le Peintre Ker-Xavier Roussel et sa fille (The Painter Ker-Xavier Roussel and His Daughter), 1903

    Edouard Vuillard

Sunlight streams into a living room from open floor to ceiling windows on the left-hand side of this painting. A man sits with his back to the window, facing a child who stands slightly to the right of the image’s center on the room’s red-and-white striped carpet. A table with a decorative urn, a patterned curtain behind the child, and the rest of the room’s furnishings are also largely in shades of white and red with blue accents. The entire scene is painted in rough, loose brushstrokes.
  • Soleil, tour, aéroplane (Sun, Tower, Airplane), 1913

    Robert Delaunay

Softly delineated shapes in a rainbow of vivid colors cover the surface of this painting. Near the top right corner, a series of boxes reminiscent of the contours of an early biplane float above a tower of intersecting green lines that extends to the bottom of the canvas. At left, hazy segments of blue, green, red, yellow, and orange intersect with and blend into one another.
