  • Santa Cruz Circle, 1997

    Richard Long

A number of rectangular bricks of natural slate of varying dimensions are packed together to form a nearly perfect circle. In this image, you are looking down at the work as installed on a light colored parquet floor from a shallow angle.
  • Divisibilité indéfinie (Indefinite Divisibility), 1942

    Yves Tanguy

Two biomorphic forms sit side by side in the foreground of this abstract, dream-like landscape. The smaller form on the left includes a gray square with red sticks emerging from its left side. Narrow gray stalks support the blue and pink shapes that make up the taller form on the right, which casts a long shadow toward the top left corner of the painting. Nine small circular discs with white sides and blue surfaces appear scattered throughout the scene.
  • New York, N.Y., 1953

    Franz Kline

An abstract arrangement of broad black brushstrokes appears against a mostly solid white background. One stroke extends from the top to bottom of the painting along its right edge and another two of similar length appear near the left edge. Other, shorter strokes extend horizontally and diagonally among these vertical elements. The black lines could resemble in outline the type of buildings and bridges that populate New York City’s skyline.

  • Venetian Bead Stringers, 1880 or 1882

    John Singer Sargent

A standing woman approaches two seated women stringing beads over a shallow wooden bowl in the center right of this painting, which is set in a large, mostly empty room. An open doorway and windows at the back of the room provide limited light. At right, a bench is positioned against a wall. The two seated women wear dark dresses while their standing companion wears a white dress mostly covered with a dark shawl.
