Join us in the gallery for a free, drop-in drawing session centered around Pablo Picasso’s Woman’s Head, 1909. This bronze sculpture is a brilliant example of how early twentieth-century European artists began to break away from literal realism. By deconstructing the human face into jutting, receding planes, Picasso was experimenting with the very same conceptual techniques found in traditional African masks. Come sketch with us, explore how these "fractured" forms create volume and movement, and consider the deep, complex history of how these aesthetic traditions intersected. Materials are provided—all are welcome!
