Larry Madrigal is a Mexican American painter, originally from Los Angeles, where his mother migrated from Mexico. In 2017, after years making work as a portrait painter, Madrigal and his wife started a family. The new and urgent demands of parenthood prompted a serious focus on the quotidian in his work, which invokes questions about the nature of ambition, responsibility, masculinity, and fatherhood. Madrigal was a three-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Artist Grant and a finalist in the AXA Art Prize. He has had solo shows in New York, Los Angeles, Bucharest, and Madrid. He currently lives and works in Phoenix with his wife and two children.
