Based in Las Vegas, Justin Favela (b. 1986) is known for large-scale installations and sculptures that manifest his interactions with American pop culture and the queer and Latinx experience. Favela explores traditional Mexican and Latin American craft—specifically cartonería—and his interest in art history, community, celebration, and home informs a practice intent on dismantling institutional hierarchies. He has exhibited his work both internationally and across the United States. His installations have been commissioned by museums including the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, and El Museo del Barrio, New York. He is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship (2021).
