Karla Diaz (b. 1976) was born, lives, and works in Los Angeles as a writer, teacher, and multidisciplinary artist. Her recent work is the result of a year of insomnia. As a stroke survivor, she practices repetitive memory exercises, using drawing as a tool for excavating and retaining information. Personal memories, folklore, familiar iconography of her Mexican heritage, and American pop culture are intertwined in often surreal compositions that consider family, loss, and the complexities of the Latinx experience in the United States. Diaz’s works have been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the California Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Her work is included in the collections of the Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Dallas Museum of Art, among others. Diaz is cofounder of the socially engaged collective and community artist space Slanguage.

Karla Diaz nació en Los Ángeles, en 1976. Ahí vive y se desempeña como escritora, docente y artista multidisciplinaria. Su obra reciente es el resultado de un año de insomnio. Como superviviente de un accidente cerebrovascular, practica ejercicios repetitivos de memoria en los que utiliza el dibujo como herramienta para extraer y retener información. Los recuerdos personales, el folclore, la iconografía familiar de su herencia mexicana y la cultura pop estadounidense se entrelazan en composiciones a menudo surrealistas acerca de la familia, la pérdida y las complejidades de la experiencia latinx en Estados Unidos. Sus obras se han expuesto dentro y fuera del país en espacios como el California Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco; el Hammer Museum, Los Ángeles; el Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Serpentine Galleries, Londres, y el Museo Casa de Cervantes, Madrid. Su trabajo forma parte las colecciones del Pérez Art Museum Miami y el Dallas Museum of Art, entre otras. Diaz es cofundadora de Slanguage Studio, un colectivo socialmente comprometido y espacio artístico comunitario.
