Join Chief Curator Emeritus Douglas Dreishpoon and Albright-Knox Research Assistant Andrew Cappetta for a discussion about several artists featured in the exhibition Looking at Tomorrow: Light and Language from The Panza Collection, 1967–1990, which features recently acquired immersive light and sound installations, and Minimal and Conceptual artworks, from the celebrated Panza Collection.
The evening will feature a screening of Crazy Wisdom: The Life & Work of Eric Orr (2007–2015), directed by Elizabeth Orr, daughter of artist Eric Orr. Part of the Southern California Light and Space movement of the 1960s and 1970s, Eric Orr was an installation artist who refused the conventional imitations of space and the physical qualities of materials by seeking the freedom of ideas. The documentary is based on archival material and interviews with Eric Orr's contemporaries, including Larry Bell, Judy Chicago, Pat Steir, and curator Maurice Tuchman.
Following the film, Andrew Cappetta will discuss the photo-and-text work of artist Douglas Huebler on view in Looking at Tomorrow: Light and Language from The Panza Collection, 1967–1990, and how it challenges traditional notions of artistic authorship, ownership, and spectatorship.
Finally, Chief Curator Emeritus Douglas Dreishpoon will discuss the exhibition and the challenges surrounding the realization of the site-specific works by Eric Orr and Jene Highstein.
