Emerging Voices in Contemporary Art: Torey Thornton in Conversation with Holly E. Hughes

On the occasion of his first museum exhibition, Torey Thornton: Sir Veil, Thornton will discuss his work with Godin-Spaulding Curator & Curator for the Collection Holly E. Hughes.
Thornton’s purposely ambiguous imagery is nestled between abstraction and figuration. He brings together seemingly impulsive combinations of forms and colors supported by slatted wood panels, large sheets of paper, and found materials. The result is visually tense imagery that explores Thornton’s interest in the perception of pictorial space. During this talk, Thornton and Hughes will delve into the selection of works for this mini-survey exhibition, the artist’s process, his unconventional use of materials, and the important role language and play take on in the paintings and sculptures he creates.
Artsy recently named Thornton one of 16 Emerging Artists to Watch in 2016.
