Miriam Bäckström’s Others Will Know Handbags
Handbags made from Miriam Bäckström’s Others Will Know, 2023, are now available in the Shop!
Miriam Bäckström (Swedish, born 1967) specifically created Others Will Know, 2023, for the Buffalo AKG Art Museum’s Jeffrey E. Gundlach Building. This large woven tapestry installation is based on a swatch of fabric no more than two inches square. Using a combination of photography, 3D technology, and virtual reality (VR), Bäckström manipulated images of the fabric and worked with skilled textile weavers in Venice, Italy, to produce the tapestry seen on the walls of the circular lobby space.
Head of Retail Operations Lauren Lamb was gifted leftover fabric from Miriam Bäckström’s textile installation and set out to create handbags from these segments. With the help of artists from Stitch Buffalo, an organization that empowers refugee women in Western New York through the sale of their handcrafted goods, the AKG was able to produce a limited number of handbags made from the very material used in Others Will Know.
Enjoy this authentic handbag, and decipher the impossibly dense, magnificently colored, seemingly infinite world that Bäckström has invented!
