About Stephen Guerra and Titus Stephens and choro

Choro, famously considered “Brazil’s classical music” by composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, is Brazil’s first and longest-living native musical tradition. It’s the instrumental older sibling to the younger vocal and percussive samba, which itself was a parent to bossa nova. In this program, Stephen and Titus will make it clear how choro earned its “classical” moniker, performing a variety of choros in different rhythms by pianist Ernesto Nazareth, whose deep admiration for the music of Chopin pours through all his compositions. Stephen and Titus will close the program with a few of Stephen’s own choro compositions, connecting the localized beginning of choro’s story to its present-day global continuation as well as celebrating Stephen’s 2023 album of original choros.
