A perennial favorite at the Lipsey Summer Jazz performance will once again feature Grammy Award–winning pianist George Caldwell and Buffalo-based trumpeter Tim Clarke in a special tribute to the great pianist and composer Donald Brown. The program celebrates the enduring Buffalo-Memphis jazz connection and honors Donald Brown and Caldwell, who were fellow students at Memphis State University. 

Long recognized as a hotbed of great jazz pianists, Memphis shaped both artists through its rich musical tradition and the influence of the great Phineas Newborn. Although widely known and admired for his work as a pianist for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Brown is especially revered as a master of contemporary jazz composition, with a body of work recorded and championed by many of the music’s leading artists.
