Beverly Pepper’s Walk Through is a sculpture in two parts. When installed, the two rectangular forms, which are slightly larger than a pair of people, are placed about three inches apart and perpendicular to each another to form an L shape. The exterior of the work is highly polished stainless steel and the interior is coated with a vivid blue paint.
Pepper polished her stainless steel surfaces to a mirror shine so that works like Walk Through would reflect the natural surroundings in which they are placed, creating a connection to the landscape and encouraging us to see ourselves as part of the sculpture. The painted interiors soften the otherwise rigidly geometric surfaces and create a space that is open yet contained.

Beverly Pepper is best known for her large-scale sculptures in cast iron, bronze, steel, stainless steel, and stone as well as site-specific projects in which she incorporates expanses of industrial metals into the landscape. Her work has been exhibited and collected by major museums around the world, and the Albright-Knox’s collection includes several sculptures by Pepper, including Zig-Zag, 1967.
