Rouleau de grillage au chiffon rouge (Roll of Chicken Wire with Red Rag)
  • Triptych with Footprints, 1970

    Antoni Tàpies

Three vertical cream-colored panels are joined to form a long thin horizontal work. A series of footprints stretches across all three panels, slightly above their centers. On the left panel, gray cloudlike forms float at top and bottom, and a grouping of letters and lines stretch diagonally from the upper left-hand toward the center. A series of lines and waves fill the bottom half of the right panel.
  • Relief over Black Space, 1958

    Antoni Tàpies

The majority of this portrait-oriented canvas is an uninterrupted expanse of matte black. In the bottom third of the canvas, a mixed-media element in shallow relief extends from the left edge. This element appears to have a bumpy, ridged texture in places. There are roughly defined and thinly applied patches of dark yellow-brown paint that appear to overlay the relief element.

Collection Highlights

All Collection Highlights
  • Carnaval d'Arlequin (Carnival of Harlequin), 1924-1925

    Joan Miró

This painting features a beige-color room full of fantastical creatures performing music and acrobatics, and floating through the air. These colorful beings are shaped like musical instruments, insects, animals, and mermaids and interact with instruments, musical notes, a ladder, dice, unicycle, a shooting star, and other objects. A window at top right looks out onto a landscape, and beneath it is a table with a fish, a globe, and papers.
  • The Marvelous Sauce, ca. 1890

    Jehan Georges Vibert

A corpulent older man wearing a long white apron over his scarlet cardinal’s robes stands with a copper sauce pan in his left hand and a spoon held aloft in triumph in his right while, to the left, a younger man in chef’s hat and coat with an apron partially covering his bright blue, knee-length trousers looks at the spoon held in his right hand with skepticism. A large stove with a massive stone hood appears behind the cardinal, and a table laden with produce and meat appears behind the chef.
  • Sentinel, 1978

    Anne Truitt

The body of this tall, thin, rectangular wooden pillar is almost entirely white. Light gray stripes run along the length of each of its four corners, and the base of the sculpture is marked with a thin black band with a thin red line running through its center. The work sits directly on the floor.
  • La Musique, 1939

    Henri Matisse

Two women look out toward the viewer from this brightly colored painting. The artist depicted these women using simple, flat shapes with dark outlines. The woman in a caramel colored dress at left sits on a floor cushion next to sheet music. The woman at right wears a marine blue jumpsuit with yellow triangles at the bottom of the legs. She has one foot on the floor and one on the couch on which she sits while playing guitar. A red tile floor contrasts with a black wall decorated with large green leaves.
  • Kilroy, 1957

    Paul Terence Feeley

    Kilroy
  • Crowded Hearts, 1987

    John Chamberlain

Crumpled and compacted pieces of red, silver, and white metal from old cars form freestanding, pillar-like shape. The metal is mostly shiny but is battered and rusted in some places.
  • La Fumée (Smoke), 1912

    Fernand Léger

  • The Lady's Last Stake, 1759

    William Hogarth

    The Lady's Last Stake
  • Page Boy at Maxim's, ca. 1927

    Chaïm Soutine

In this tall, narrow portrait, painted with loose, energetic brush strokes, a young man wearing a deep red uniform with matching cap stands in front of a dark burgundy, gray, green, and blue background. A row of gold buttons extends down the front of the boy’s jacket. His right hand is by his side, palm facing out, and his left hand is clenched in front of his waist. The figure’s dark eyes, hair, and moustache stand out again his pale skin.
