Collection Highlights

All Collection Highlights
  • Les Arbres (The Trees), ca. 1906

    André Derain

A vibrantly colored landscape with several slim-trunked trees and mountains in the background fills this canvas. The sky is a light yellow while the ground is a slightly darker, sandy hue. The artist used cool blues with patches of crimson to depict the mountains, and warm reds, yellows, and oranges to emphasize tall, thin tree trunks in the foreground. Shadows fall diagonally from the trees toward the right hand corner of the painting where the artist’s small, blue signature rests.
  • Piano Piece, 1993

    Nam June Paik

At the heart of this sculpture are thirteen boxy television sets of different sizes stacked atop of an upright player piano. Some screens livestream the moving keys as recorded by a video camera on a tripod set up in front of the piano while others show prerecorded footage of hands playing a piano. A white stool and a small spotlight on a tripod illuminating the keyboard are also set up in front of the piano.
  • Corazón de roca con sangre (Heart of Rock with Blood), 1975

    Ana Mendieta

First of two images. Still from a video of the artist naked on the banks of a river, which is just visible in the upper-right corner of the image. She kneels on the leaf-covered ground, staring at the silhouette of a female figure dug into the earth in shallow relief.
  • Untitled (intern "Shape 7") (KG/O 2010_8031L), 2010

    Katharina Grosse

This abstract sculpture appears overall like an oversized piece of paper with a V-shaped divot cut out of the right side and curling edges. It balances on the floor near its center. The underside of the plastic form is white, but bright patches of spray-painted yellow, blue, green, purple, orange, black, gray, and pink cover the top, overlapping and dripping onto one another.
  • Divisibilité indéfinie (Indefinite Divisibility), 1942

    Yves Tanguy

Two biomorphic forms sit side by side in the foreground of this abstract, dream-like landscape. The smaller form on the left includes a gray square with red sticks emerging from its left side. Narrow gray stalks support the blue and pink shapes that make up the taller form on the right, which casts a long shadow toward the top left corner of the painting. Nine small circular discs with white sides and blue surfaces appear scattered throughout the scene.
